Plans in for 86-bed Morecambe hotel

TAG Morecambe is eyeing up the land at 228-235 Marine Road Central to deliver a five-storey venue opposite the future Eden Project Morecambe.

Designed by DAY Architectural, the scheme would see the demolition of the existing buildings on site to make way for the 86-bedroom hotel.

Guests would have access to a 1,200 sq ft restaurant and bar, as well as a 1,000 sq ft retail unit.

There would be no car parking spaces provided due to the provision of nearby public car parks, however there would be eight cycle bays.

TAG has submitted plans to Lancaster City Council for the hotel, which would be positioned opposite the highly-anticipated Eden Project Morecambe.

Luke Averill, managing director of TAG, said: “After securing £50m of Levelling Up funding to create Eden Project Morecambe, the town has received further significant investment.

“It’s anticipated that Eden Project Morecambe will bring 750,000 people a year on average to the area, a huge economic injection”, he continued.

“Our building and hotel will create over 60 new jobs in the area throughout construction and hotel operations.”

Subject to approval, work is expected to start on site next year.

Scalia Planning is the scheme’s planning consultant. The project team also includes Zerum, MB Heritage, Rockhunter, Adept, Jaw Sustainability, SVM and TPM Landscape, and SK Transport. Hydrock is advising on acoustics, flood risk, and drainage strategy.

Some disappointing losses with this. Morecambe is absolutely desperate for investment so they’ll approve it.

Morecambe has needed major investment for a long time. Hopefully the Eden Centre and this new hotel will only be the beginning.

@Heritage Action – what’s being lost that’s so disappointing? I’m not a heritage expert so I’m keen to learn.

I’ve had a look at the buildings currently existing – none of these are what I’d call anything special, especially the two on the left.

Morecambe has a fantastic urban siting, but, apart from the Palace, its Victorian buildings (and I live Victoria buildings) are a bit workaday. The architectural masterpiece on the town is, of course, the streamline Deco Midland Hotel.

Saying that, this proposal could be refined more. Now if you had practices Ollier Smurthwaite or Tim Groom, it could be a different story…
