Sourced lines up former nightclub site for Liverpool resi
The developer has launched a consultation for its proposals to deliver 119 apartments on the corner of West Derby Road and Green Lane.
Sourced Development Group wants to provide a mix of one- to three-bedroom flats and townhouses on the former site of Coconut Grove nightclub.
Named Carlton Court, the part five-, part six-storey building would also feature 2,800 sq ft of ground-floor commercial space.
Plans would bring the vacant Tuebrook site back into use.
The home of the Carlton Cinema from 1932 until 1982, the plot was soon transformed into Coconut Grove nightclub. The venue closed in 1997 and was demolished in 2017, with the site remaining empty since.
Carlton Court is part of Sourced Development Group’s plans to deliver 3,000 homes across the North West over the next three years.
The company is currently on-site building its 310-apartment Scholar’s Court complex in Liverpool. Work is also progressing in Salford, where Sourced is delivering the 525-home at Regent Plaza.

Not sure why they have to have a consultation as in the main those who support it will remain silent and those who are against will come out with the usual opposition in the form of : we don’t need apartments, what about parking, we don’t want developers making profits in Liverpool, and so on.
Just get the thing built as what’s there now is an empty plot gathering weeds and litter.

Hate the design. Blandest of mid-2000s pap. Architects who think big slabs of render and panels of cladding constitute ‘design’.

Another consultation why cant they just make a decision and just allow decent developments that will improve that area rather than drag it through for month or even years? Well done again LCC.

I wish something could have been done with the Carlton but other than that, this is absolutely fine for the site. Sooner it is built, the better.
Not that it makes any difference to the development itself, but for reporting and historical purposes, the Coconut grove nightclub and Carlton cinema are not the same site as stated. They were neighbours and only became one site once both had been demolished to. The Coconut grove was already a caberet/nightclub (girls name I think but I can’t remember) before it changed it’s name to the Coconut grove. I believe it was built as a bowling alley and had it’s own underground car park. It was actually called ‘The Venue’ as well in the early 90s when it was a dance club.

Ah, the Cokey Grove: favoured haunt of mulleted Liverpool players of yore with a penchant for teenage girls perilously close to 16 years of age. A venue much unlamented by many of that parish. Except for some local fifth-formers.
